If you’ve never played the game Heads Up, I highly recommend it. It is great for if you are waiting in a long line or even if you just want a party game. The basic idea is that you hold a card (or your mobile phone) up to your head. On it is displayed a name or word that you have to guess. Everyone else gives you clues and you try and get through as many as you can before time is up.
So I decided to make a version using composers. It is a great way to review at the end of a unit. And pretty simple to create. All you need are 3×5 cards with the pictures and names of the composers on them.
How the Game Works
- Split students into groups of 3-4.
- Give each a group a pack of composer cards.
- Set a time limit (usually 3-4 minutes should be good, depending on how many composers you are going over).
- One student holds a card over their head. The others in their group give them hints about the composer to help them guess the name. For example, if you had the Beethoven card, students might say things like he was famous for symphonies, he went deaf or he wrote Fur Elise.
- Once the composer has been guessed, then another student takes a turn guessing.
