Instrument Family Song

I always find that the beginning of the year is just JAM PACKED with stuff I need to teach. Maybe it because I am having to teach procedures on top of content, but I think it is also because we are learning composers AND vocabulary AND instruments of the orchestra. It’s a lot. So anytime I can multi-task to things into one, it make me very, very happy.

This year I created a quick little song to teach my third graders to help them learn the from main instrument families of the orchestra. According to the State of Florida, technically we have FIVE families (keyboard family is added in), but there were only 4 phrases in the song, so sorry keyboards!

Another benchmark students in my district are supposed to learn during the first quarter is singing in a round. And this song can easily be sun as a round. WINNING!

It is sung to the tune of Frere Jacques (Are you sleeping Brother John). My apologies on the rather wordy percussion phrase. It’s a bit of a tongue twister, but I kind of like because it is a fun challenge AND it really makes them have to think about the characteristics that define percussion as they sing. Enjoy!

This Instrument Family Song makes teaching the instrument families of the orchestra a snap!
